Every once in a while I find myself in a creative rut. No inspiration, no ideas, no creativity. But, I’ve gotten the solution down to a science! So without further ado, here’s my tips for becoming re-inspired:
Update Your Space
I usually find that my environment greatly effects my creativity level. I think the easiest and cheapest way to update my space quite frequently is updating my wall decor. Mostly with new pictures on my gallery walls or maybe a new clock….maybe even painting a wall (but yes, that’s a little impractical). I love inspiring images, so I change them on my walls yes, but also on my phone background, laptop background, anywhere I’m constantly looking. I need new things to catch my eye and give me that new sense of inspiration.
Pick a New Favorite Color
I know this is scary. This is coming from the girl who obsesses over colors. When I have a favorite color-my most recent being Pantone’s Cool Blue– I immerse myself in it. I paint my room that color, I buy all my clothes in that color, I spend hours creating color schemes around that color…you thought I was kidding when I said obsess? But even if you’re not a crazy color addict like me-it’s good to change. It’s good to let yourself be inspired by a new color, preferably a color that scares you. Recently, I’ve been more and more attracted to pale green. I’m not sure why, I usually shy away from greens, but it’s good. It inspires me to go outside my little blue bubble. I’ve also really been loving gray which has been a good slight alternative to my usual white which I have everywhere (the minimalist in me can’t help it!). I digress, even just adding a little accent color to your usual fave will inspire you to move outside the rut you might be stuck in!
Go Somewhere New
Traveling doesn’t have to mean traveling to Europe, or the West Coast, or to India (although I’m sure that would do wonders for inspiration). Traveling can mean just visiting the coffee shop in the next town over instead of your local Starbucks. Or, just going for a long drive, or hiking at your nearest national park, or going to a new grocery store, anything that’s out of the ordinary for you. Just get out of your office or your house, go do something somewhere new. And while you’re there take everything in, everything. Use all your senses to just experience. You will be amazed what it does for your creativity.
Listen to New Jams
It’s great if you’ve had Taylor Swift’s first album on constant repeat since 2008, but it’s probably not doing much for your creativity. Listen to something inspiring. My ALL TIME most inspiring albums are An Awesome Wave by alt-J, The Queen is Dead by The Smiths, and Sylvan Esso’s self titled album. Seriously, I put on one of those albums and everything changes. And if those don’t particularly work for you, Spotify has a Creativity Boost playlist with all kinds of tracks to boost your inspired spirit!
Seriously, people. In my opinion, Tumblr is the most inspiring website/social network known to man. And if you don’t have one, get one. Or if you want to see what inspires me you can visit my page (they’re called ‘blogs’ but they’re obviously not real blogs) here.
Okay, that’s it for now, I’m sure there’s a million more ways to get inspired but those are just some of my favorites! I hope these inspire you to get inspired. Love you all!
